Windows Updates Do Not Install

Recently many of our customers have been experiencing some very serious issues with windows updates. The most common problem we tend to have is when windows updates download but do not install. This issue can be accompanied by any number of errors, but no matter what error is we have come up with a script that seems to do a lot of good.

Copy the following into a text file and rename wufix.bat, save it somewhere you can find it then double click on it. This program has to be run as administrator.

Lets step through the code to see what it does:

sc config bits start= demand
sc config cryptsvc start= auto
sc config wuauserv start= auto

SC (which stands for service controller) is a great little command line tool that lets you do all sorts of things with services from the command line. In this snippet of code we use the config parameter (which is used to make persistent configuration changes to a service) followed by the name of the service followed by the start parameter (which means we are going to define what a process does when the system first starts up). The three processes were are starting here are those required by windows updates to function. STANDARD WINDOWS WARNING: Makes very sure you know what you are doing with the sc program before you use it!!!

You then have five options for startup type: Boot, System, Auto, Disabled, and Demand (which is the equivalent to manual in the services mmc). Boot and System should not generally be used and are for special circumstances in which a service needs to be started by the bootloader or at kernel initialization time. Services set to Auto are started and run in the background even if a user is not logged on (this is often used for important background services like DHCP client). Services set to demand are not started automatically, but will start if needed by the system. Services that are set to disabled will not start and must be manually configured to either auto or demand before they start.

This next bit of code stops the same three services. We just modified so that we can re-register the dll's related to Windows Update.

sc stop wuauserv
sc stop BITS
sc stop cryptsvc

The next bit of code goes through and re-registers all the DLL's related to Windows updates and the Cryptographic services.
