Robocopy replaces Xcopy

I have sometimes had problems when I use xcopy so I found a nice alternative. It’s called Robocopy. Robocopy is much more robust then xcopy and it has better logging capabilities. There are a couple of defaults that you have to change but overall it’s a great tool. The default settings that annoy me are first the number of times it tries to copy the file if it fails, which is a million. Pretty bad for starters but the default wait time between retries is 30 sec. So multiply 30 times a million and that’s how many seconds you have to wait on a corrupt file. I suggest changing both this settings /R:3 and /w:5 (retry three times and wait 5 seconds between retires). Also it’s nice to have a report at the end of the copy session a /v lets you know how many files it failed on (in addition to other use full information). Also the default information to copy is only the Data, Attributes and timestamp, leaving out the Security, Ownership, or auditing info. Use /copyall to get everything or if you just want the default and the security use /sec. A setting I really like when just trying to update existing files is the /XO setting which eXcludes Old files. Lastly I like the log file you can create afterwards by using /log:file.txt.

An example of the command would go like this;

robocopy.exe c:\SourceLocation x:\DestenationLocation /E /copyall /XO /R:3 /W:5 /V /log:c:\file.txt
