This link outlines how to grab the product key from the registry. Here’s the gist:



1) Yank the HD, put it in an enclosure and attach it to your machine.

2) Find C:\Windows\System32\config\software (the registry might be in a couple of other places as outlined in the article linked)

3) Use loadhive.exe (mentioned in the linked post) to load this hive as a branch of your own registry. It’ll show up as something like “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE_00” (the program will tell you)

4) Under there, go to Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion.

5) Open the DigitalProductID key.

6) Copy the data outlined below (everything that’s a 1 and not a 0- note that you’ll have to do this manually since it won’t copy / paste from here):

7) Enter these digits into the other mentioned program “XPKeyDecrypt.exe”.

8) It’ll show the plaintext key itself. Copy this down, start the reinstall and pat yourself on the back. Just make sure you know which XP CD to use!
