Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) Setup

A friend recently asked about setting up BIS and for future reference I'm posting the directions here.

If you want to get your company emails on your BlackBerry but don't have a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), you can use BIS (Blackberry Internet Service). Depending on their carrier you go to the BIS setup site, for ATT it's;

for Verizon it's;

http://www.blackberry.com/go/vzw

for sprint it's;

http://sprint.blackberry.com/

Whichever you use you'll need the PIN and the IMEI numbers off the blackberry device to setup an account. These numbers are found on the BlackBerry under the Option menu (the wrench icon) then go to the Status menu and at the bottom you'll find the PIN and the IMEI options. After you log in or create a new account the settings are fairly intuitive. Under the Email Accounts window, click on the Setup Account button and configure your email to pull email for your company or click on the Create Address button to setup a BlackBerry email address (i.e. you@blackberry.com). After you setup the account then click on the Service Book menu item on the left and click on the Send Service Book button. This sends the settings to the BlackBerry device and should be the last step. If you have any problems just call your wireless service provider and they are usually helpful.

PS Make sure you've enable POP3 on the server and opened the firewall ports to allow necessary traffic to the server.
