Command Line: Basics of Pipes and Redirection

One of the reasons a lot of Linux stuff hasn't moved into the GUI world is because of the sheer power of its command line. Two of the pillars of this power are pipes and redirection, which I outline here.

Pipes are used to connect the output of one command to the input of another using the "|" sign (shift + "\"). Probably the most frequent use of this is to feed the grep command, which filters input based on a search pattern. For example:

ls /etc | grep apache

In this case, the ls command lists all of the files in the /etc directory and pipes this list to the grep command, which makes it so that only lines containing the text string "apache" are actually shown.

Another typical use of pipes would be:

ls /usr/bin | less

This would make a scrollable list of files in the /usr/bin folder.

Redirection can be easily confused with pipes at first, but they're very different. Using the ">" sign much like the "|" above, they take the output of one command and output it to a file. This can be useful for taking notes, logging, etc. For example, to make a file with a list of every occurrence of the word "monkey" in a file called "MonkeyStory.txt":

grep monkey MonkeyStory.txt > listing_file.txt

What if we already have a file called "listing_file.txt" and we just want to add to it? We append using a double ">" (">>"):

grep monkey MonkeyStory.txt >> listing_file.txt

The appending redirector is especially useful for logging.
