Originally built system with Kingston KVR800D2N5K2/2G (800 MHz 4 x 1GB) non-ECC and the stock BIOS that was provided with the Asus Board (Bios Date was within two weeks of the build date . . . what were the odds that the BIOS would end up being a problem . . .

Initially, the build was pretty uneventful, we had built a pilot box and it was working with a 4 x1GB ram config, but was having BSOD when under full processor load (normally pointing to a heat issue) - Upgraded CPU cooler ordered and awaiting installation. Initially went with Zalman cooler (however, it won't fit correctly with the North and South bridge additional copper cooling system on the Striker Extreme - it fits in the well but you can't apply the clip due to the shrouds over the capacitors).

Built three new units - using same parts list. Now comes the problems: Kingston was initially on the AVL (approved vendor list) from ASUS - finding that AVL is a stone-cold Pain the the A$$. Systems were built in the exact same manner, with the exact same parts. None of the units will boot with 4 GB ram installed. Eventually had to drop them down to 1 GB in slot A1 to get them to even allow Windows installation. A few comments about the ASUS motherboard - many cool features supporting overclocking and tweaking - Unfortunately, they are onboard inside the case and the default is active - not a good thing when one of the options is a CMOS clear. I'll boil it down to the basics. ASUS Striker Extreme appears to have an issue supporting all four of the DIMM sockets - the configuration requires that what is done in A1 B1 must be the sames as A2 B2 and even then it is a bet as to how stable it will be. The odd thing about about the ASUS is that the first pair of DIMM slots are labled A1 A2 and the second pair is labeled B1 B2, however the color coding that the slots use to indicate RAM pairing are A1 B1 and A2 B2 - Even the folks at Crucial didn't know which was correct and the documentation from ASUS basically indicated that there was four DIMM slots . . . Thanks for that ASUS. The current BIOS flash helps address RAM compatibility issues and resolves some of the issues surrounding the system stability.
