New path for the dentist

Posted 12-27-2007 at 08:21 PM by Bob_McMillen
Yesterday one of my technicians and I installed active directory on a server for a dentist. The server wasn't new per se, but the previous company who serviced the customer couldn't figure out how to configure AD so they just flat out didn't.
It didn't take long to configure the server but then we came across a new problem we hadn't seen before. When we tried to join the computers to the domain we were denied. The error was pretty generic so we didn't have a lot to work with.
We decided...

Christmas Eve

Posted 12-24-2007 at 08:32 PM by Bob_McMillen
Well its Christmas Eve and even though everyone called me a Grinch for having them show up for half a day, we got a lot done.
I signed the lease for the new office, had a meeting about the moving plan and got some billable time in. Merry Christmas to me.
We also moved the rest of our customers email to the fiber connection. Our FIOS connection is 30 Mb which is roughly the speed of 20 T1's all for the cost of less than one T1.

Starting in two weeks we will have a new...

New Office

Posted 12-21-2007 at 09:10 PM by Bob_McMillen
Well its time to move. Our current office is falling apart, literally. The ceiling tiles are soaked and collapsing, and the landlord thought it would be a good idea to contain it by connecting a garden hose into a bucket draped down our walls from the ceiling.

Server crash

Posted 12-18-2007 at 10:02 PM by Bob_McMillen
I couldn't believe the day after our party we had a customer with a branch office in Irvine had their server crash after a major power outage.
We have huge UPSs and graceful shutdown procedures but it just didn't matter.
The server came back up but the drive array connected to it was running so slow that Exchange wouldn't turn on.
At first I thought it was a bad hard drive. We are running RAID 5 so it would make sense that everything would be up, but slower.
After...

Christmas Party

Posted 12-18-2007 at 09:50 PM by Bob_McMillen
We had our Christmas party last Friday. We took a vote a few months ago and decided to have it at the Embassy Suites which is way better than the Chuck E Cheese we had it at the year before.
Among other things we had prime rib, and chocolate cheesecake.
I decided to give away some funny awards. It all went pretty well until I told the MS Action Pack story about my wife canceling our company credit card when we bought a Microsoft CD kit. She thought I may have rented time from a...
