Forensic day

I met with one our techs from the office today to do some forensics on a restaurant who was making an insurance claim. They said that a time sync error caused their motherboards to be attacked and burned up. The insurance company hired us to find out the real story. It turns out the computers that had problems were covered in dust from the various ingredients they use to cook. After three years one of the computers finally had overheating problems. The were also lacking any anti virus program. So get this: They claimed that their email was causing their computers to be off on their time sync which caused $40K worth of damage with a potential loss in the millions. Since one thing had nothing to do with the other I can guess how this will go for them.
I then had an interesting slowness issue to work out with a different customer's branch office in California. Whenever I type that I think of the way Arnold says "Callyfornya". I love that guy.
They had weird phone problems that Time Warner finally took the blame for and now their internet was slow. I logged into the firewall and found a ton of errors on their network interface. These errors are usually caused by one network card communicating at one speed and the other card set to something different. In this case I had the firewall set to half duplex and Time Warner set it to full duplex. That was the config we agreed on last month but somehow it got changed. They also didn't provision all of the speed the customer was paying for. They basically had the speed of an ADSL, but they were paying for 2 T1's. Well we got that straightened out and their speed went up like crazy. I love it when its simple and its not my fault.
Actually I don't think its ever my fault.
