A busy week

Well yesterday we recorded another radio show. Our 110th episode of All Tech Radio. We had a guest on we have had a few times before, Lanny Reding to discuss physical security converging with network security.

Then the problems started.
I had to go to a business with four locations to install new site to site tunnels back to a main office. I had a tech in the three branch offices while I was at the main office. Integra, the ISP, ran late as usual. The tech from Integra had his engineer on speakerphone and she didn't realize that she was on speakerphone. She said she forgot to order the phone lines and started to tell a joke about it when the tech on site yelled loudly she was on speakerphone. She then says "Oh your kidding me right?" and then continues to laugh and make more embarrasing comments. I wish I had a dollar for every time I did that too.
So all four sites come on line in surprising speed after that, but the tunnels won't come up. A tunnel is VPN connection that makes it appear a branch office is in the same office as the main one. You can then share data and other resources seemlessly.
Just to make sure everything would go well I decided to configure the firewalls myself. I made a mistake somewhere and couldn't figure it out for hours. Since it was halloween I decided to go home and take the kids trick or treating while I took a break from racking my brain. Sometimes you need to step away for these things to come to you.
We had a great time. My youngest was an elevator complete with a bell, buttons and sliding doors made by his aunt. My other son was a Pokemon character and along with a gaggle of other neighborhood kids they screamed their way around the neighborhood high on sugar and volume. When we finally got them to bed, but not to sleep of course, I went back to figuring this thing out. It turns out I had used the wrong subnet by one @#$$#@$% octet in every firewall. I was able to remote into each firewall and get the tunnels going around midnight. Now that was a fun Halloween. I then realized that I had munched my way through eight fun size chocolate bars for which I paid dearly when I woke up with quite a stomach ache. I can't wait for what disaster Thanksgiving will bring.
